Skills Recognition

Skills recognition is the acknowledgement by a registered training organisation (RTO) that a trainee has gained an appropriate level of skills and knowledge that would have otherwise been developed through formal training. These skills and knowledge may have been gained through some form of study, through a training provider or by self-tuition, work or life experience.

Skills recognition enables trainees to gain:

  • A nationally recognised qualification without completing the entire training program
  • Formal recognition of their skills and knowledge, increasing the chance of career progression.

As an RTO, LabTech Training (LTT) will apply skills recognition in two ways:

  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Also known as Recognition of Current Competency (RCC)
  • Credit Transfer.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL (or RCC) is the acknowledgement of skills and knowledge obtained through:

  • Formal training or study including courses at school, college, adult education and training programs at work
  • Work experience including paid and volunteer work
  • Life experience including skills attained through other pursuits

Important features and benefits of RPL include:

  • RPL is an assessment-only pathway
  • All trainees are offered RPL on enrolment
  • RPL recognises both current and prior knowledge and experience and measures it against the course in which the trainee is enrolled
  • The trainee may not need to complete the entire training program if he or she already possesses some of the competencies in the program.
  • Trainees can finish their courses earlier
  • RPL reduces study loads
  • Training requirements can be more effectively targeted.

LTT's involvement in the RPL process:

  • When applying for RPL, the trainee must provide LTT with the evidence of prior learning - the LTT Assessor assists in this process.
  • LTT will take previous experience and study into account, whether it was achieved in Australia or abroad.

Credit Transfer

Trainees can gain formal recognition for any relevant training that they have successfully completed at any RTO. Credit is granted by LTT for units of competency (or modules) that have been completed at LTT or any other RTO. This process is sometimes referred to as 'exemptions' or 'advanced standing'.
